Macdonald / Hargreaves94; The Life of English philosopher Thomas Hobbes bound with the autobiography of Italian mathematician Gerolamo Cardano. Philosophi Vita is in fact a collection of three separate biographies of Hobbes. „The various Lives of Hobbes are clearly described by G. C. Robertson: „There are three original accounts of Hobbes’s life, first published together in 1681 [M/H no. 93], two years after his death, by R. B. (Richard Blackbourne M.D. [b. 1652] a friend of Hobbes’s admirer John Aubreynot, as sometimes supposed, Ralph Bathurst), with Cowley’s Ode [etc.]. (I) „T. H. Malmesb. Vita,“ written in Latin by Hobbes himself or (as also reported) by T. Rymer, at his dictation; (2) „Vitæ Hobbiana Auctarium,“ written in Latin by Black-bourne on the basis of Aubrey’s English notes; (3) „T. H. Malmesb. Vita carmine ex-pressa“, written in elegiac couplets by Hobbes at the age of eighty-four [M/H no. 91] Latin notes on front and rear free endpapers and rear flyleaf. Some underlining and corrections in an early hand. Our copy is the first duodez Edition of these three biographies paralell / in the same year as the Octavo Edition [ M/H 93]. Its bound with the famous autobiography of „the last polymath of the Renaissance“ Hieronymus Cardanus (Mediolanensis) (* 24. September 1501 in Pavia; 21. September 1576 in Rom), Some soiling to vellum; front pastedown with remnants of earlier bookplate, a few clipped endleaves and/or flyleaves, verso of ffep with small patch, text crisp and clean; very good.
