Willems 858; Gay -Lem. Gestochenes ExLibris Beorge Cockburn (1772-1853). Sehr wohlerhaltenes Exemplar. Engl. Descr. first of two simultaneously published Elzevier prints, which apart from a few details in the marginalia do not differ. Without the added work “La puttana errante”, which according to Willems usually is added to the first print version, though according to Brunet and Graesse is said to be added to the second one. The copy was owned by Admiral of the Fleet Sir George Cockburn (1772-1853), bearing his personal exlibris. He had served the Royal Navy for sixty years, and had not only been present at battles during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars (battle of Cape St. Vincent 1797), but had also played a major, if not notorious, role in the War of 1812, which culminated in the capture and burning of Washington D.C. (including the White House and the Capitol) in 1814. In 1815, Cockburn was assigned to convey Napoleon to St. Helena. Engraved exlibris George Cockburn. Very well-preserved copy.
